It is very common beginners and intemediate surfers to take off straight all the way down the bottom before they turn the board to surf down the line.

When the waves are hollow and fast, most of times inexperienced surfers get stuck behind the white water section.

It happens because the bottom is the flattest part of the wave and it has no power to generate speed. So, if the wave is running fast down the line, the surfer should do a few pumps on the face of the wave before he/she can go all the way down the bottom to set the first bottom turn.

The following photos show step by step how to generate speed working on body extension, compression and arms movements with the proper sync .

Step 1 – Project the board downward (red arrow), compressing the body (blue arrow) and move the arms down (green lines).

Step 2 – Project the board upward (red arrow), extending the body (blue arrow) and throwing the arms up(green lines).
